This weekend (May 30th) four Saskatchewan paddlers returned to Bellingham to compete in the 43rd Annual Ski to Sea team relay race. The event starts at the Mt. Baker Ski Area to Bellingham Bay and features athletes who compete in the Cross Country Skiing, Downhill Ski/Snowboarding, Running, Road Bike, Canoe, Cyclocross, and Sea Kayak Legs. The canoe course is approximately 18.5 miles (30km) along the Nooksack River. The course is considered a Class 1 river due to its fast flow rates and short sections of rapids. The river is also notorious for deceptive hazards like log jams, submerged logs, undercut trees and other fun obstructions to navigate while racing. This year Mike Vincent (RCC) and Ivan English (SCC) returned to paddle the canoe leg for team Aeromech. Ivan and Mike were the fastest boat on the course with a time of 1:55:57 helping their team to a 7th place finish overall, and a 4th place finish in the Competitive Open Division. Fiona Vincent (RCC) and Catherine Trask (SCC) also returned to the race this year to paddle for team Boomer’s Drive In, in the Mixed Competitive division. They were the third women’s boat and completed the canoe course in a time of 2:16:27, helping their team to a 16th place finish overall and a 1st place finish in the Mixed Completive division.
